Distinctive programs
Greenslopes State School offers a range of distinctive programs, in addition to the regular school curriculum, to enhance the quality of educational experiences provided to our students. These innovative programs have been developed in response to the needs of our students.
We believe that all children have strengths in one or more cognitive domains, and that educational experiences should cater for and develop different ways of ‘being smart’. Therefore many of our distinctive programs reflect the educational philosophy of 'multiple intelligences.'
LOTE Spanish
Learning a foreign language broadens children's cultural awareness as well as helping their intellectual development. Research shows that it is advantageous for children to learn a second language from a very young age as they are less inhibited about speaking in front of their peers and also develop a more authentic accent.
Learning a second language improves children’s intellectual development in many ways, including the development of English language skills. Children also develop intercultural competence as they learn how to consider the perspectives of people from other cultures in their communications. Currently at Greenslopes students commence their language learning from Prep through to Year 6.
The school’s official Language Other Than English (LOTE) language is Spanish and the school community comes together for a variety of celebrations
The Arts
Art enrichment programs
Greenslopes employs specialist Arts teachers to extend student learning and experiences in all aspects of the arts. Specialist arts instruction is provided to all students from Prep to Year 6. Middle primary students who demonstrate giftedness in the visual arts may be selected to participate in an arts enrichment program. Selection for the program is based on their talent and level of interest. The program enables children to expand their artistic endeavour.
'Cantores' Choir
'Cantores' is an extension program for students in Years 4 to 6 who demonstrate talent in the performing arts to develop their skills under the guidance of a specialised musical director. Students receive whole group and individualised tuition, working towards public performances.
The Greenslopes 'Mini Voces' program gives junior students who love to sing the opportunity to learn how to make beautiful music as a choir. Children learn about singing and pronunciation, music reading, phrasing and dynamics, breathing techniques and correct posture as well as working as a team and being a team member.
Instrumental music programs
Instrumental music (Strings) instruction is offered to students at Greenslopes from Year 3. Enrolment information and fee schedules are available at the school office.
